In Montana, a landlord generally must return the security deposit within 10 days after the tenancy ends if there are no deductions, or within 30 days if deductions are claimed, together with a written list of the deductions.
If a landlord wrongfully withholds a security deposit, Montana law may allow the tenant to recover the money due and, in the right case, reasonable attorney’s fees and court costs.
